Help Us Bridge the HIV/AIDS Funding Gap

For nearly two decades our organisation, MotoAction, has provided essential HIV/AIDS healthcare services and support to under-served communities, the socially and geographically isolated in Cameroon.

Today, our mission faces an unprecedented challenge.

The recent freeze of the United States’ PEPFAR funding has severely disrupted Cameroon's HIV/AIDS healthcare ecosystem, putting the lives of over 400,000 PLHIV at risk due to the closure of clinics, canceling of services, and limited supply of essential medications, viral load tests, and PrEP supplies.

At a time when so many services in Cameroon are being cancelled or reduced, and traditional healthcare channels are under stress, MotoAction’s digital platforms are a vital lifeline for the populations we serve.

We are mobilising - to upgrade our digital platforms so they can better serve as communication, education and awareness hubs, and continue to provide life-saving information and support for communities in need.

The Importance of Digital Healthcare in Times of Crisis

In today’s world, digital platforms are one of the most important tools used to reach people in need, especially in times of crisis. With the funding freeze severely affecting traditional healthcare channels, MotoAction’s digital platforms are a vital lifeline for the populations we serve.

Since 2018 MotoAction has built and managed Digital Health Platforms to reach a wider cross-section of our communities in need:

  • 237 TÔPÔ Santé Beauté au Quotidien (Facebook) - created in 2018 as a health information platform targeting both men and women, with a particular focus on young women and girls. 237 TÔPÔ shares educational content on sexual and reproductive health, disease prevention, hygiene, and general well-being.

  • Club CRDMAS (Facebook Group) - established in 2019 as a virtual meeting space for Cameroonian health associations and organizations, where we facilitate expert-led discussions on pressing health topics via Facebook Live sessions.

Our Live sessions are interactive, and participants can ask questions and share experiences from their communities. Following each session, a best practices guide is compiled and shared across our platforms, including our website and Facebook.

We program open webinars for our public audience of 6,000+ members, and invite-only session for our 278-member private community (due to the sensitive nature of the topics discussed) representing 45 associations across Cameroon, including from Douala, Yaoundé, Bafoussam, and Bertoua.

Since our online platform launch in 2019, we have covered a range of health topics, including:

  • Unwanted pregnancies and their psychological impact

  • Infertility and access to fertility treatments

  • Supporting survivors of gender-based violence

  • Reducing HIV infections among adolescents and young people

  • Mental health care in the context of HIV

  • Endometriosis

  • Menstrual hygiene management

  • Female genital mutilation

  • The multi-pathology approach to HIV care

  • COVID-19: vaccine research status and challenges for Cameroon and Africa

  • Aging with HIV: challenges ahead

  • The COVID-19 vaccine: duties and responsibilities

  • COVID-19 treatment and alternative medicine

  • Cholera outbreaks: prevention and case management

Enhancing these platforms is a necessity to ensure that access to healthcare information isn't disrupted. With your support, we can continue to provide reliable health information, and keep people safe and informed.

Our 237 Tôpô Santé Facebook page shares HIV & AIDs-related healthcare content - like this video about Andréa, who talks about living as an HIV-positive mother.

Why This Matters

And Why We Need Your Help Now

In Cameroon, more than 400,000 people living with HIV rely on support that is currently at risk. PEPFAR provided 38% of funding for Cameroon’s HIV-AIDS response programs. The freeze in U.S. foreign aid has destabilized the entire healthcare system, leaving many without the critical resources and care they need.

The recent funding pull-back by the US means:

  • Essential medications, viral load tests, and PrEP supplies are at risk.

  • 2,332 healthcare workers could lose their jobs

  • 347 clinics risk closing

MotoAction has been a key player in filling these gaps for nearly two decades, by providing treatment access, essential health information, and community outreach. Now, with the digital space becoming more vital than ever, we need to upgrade our online platforms to continue delivering life-saving content and support.

Your support is critical in keeping our community’s healthcare resilient during these disruptive times.

Our Legacy of Healthcare Support

In addition to our digital healthcare services, MotoAction has run over a dozen multi-year programs dedicated to improving healthcare access for Cameroon’s most underserved populations.

We have developed and implemented health education and awareness programs, and provided access to basic healthcare and diagnostics through our mobile clinics. Initially focused on combating HIV/AIDS, we have expanded our scope to a broader health, human rights, and well-being approach, addressing the needs of vulnerable populations such as girls and women, sexual minorities, adolescents and young people living with HIV, sex workers, and mobile populations in the transport sector.

Digital Support for In-the-Field Programs

All of our programs are tailored to the specific communities we are engaging with. We combine education and awareness media campaigns with on-the-ground events.

The information and resources we provide to individuals, families, and health professionals empower them to make informed decisions about their health and take more responsibility for their own healthcare - such as testing for HIV and other diseases. From combating HIV/AIDS via education, awareness, and testing, to offering multi-pathology screening, we would like to increase the  supporting digital components for these campaigns.

Our Impact

The work we do, with the help of the partners who support us, has made a positive difference in thousands of lives among the most neglected communities in Cameroon, including motorcycle-taxi community, transportation / trucking communities, sex-workers, young mothers and children living with HIV.
